One type is fitted internally and the other is fitted externally. The later variety is generally fitted at the back of the fridge and is sausage like in shape. In fact all the cartridges, whatever are the brand have to be replaced, like any other cartridges that you may have in your home because the old cartridges cease to be effective after a period of time and believe it or not replacements are not more expensive than ill health and diseases.
