Is It A Vista Or A Camry?

Launched in 1982, the Vista by Toyota was supposed to be one of their premier vehicles, complete with its own dealership with the same name. It was the sister nameplate to their popular Camry and there are very few differences between the two. The front and rear ends of the Vista are different from the Camry, as well as the fact that the Vistas are primarily hardtops where Camry’s are sedans. Every time a new version of the Camry was introduced, so was the Vista. This continued up until the 1997 model year was released when Toyota released a new, larger Camry model, specifically for the United States market. The Vista was redesigned in 1998 without any influence from the new Camry model.

The fourth generation of the Toyota Vista that was released in 1998 retained the shorter Japanese styling that was discontinued with the new Camry model. Part of this decision by Toyota was due to the strict taxation laws in Japan. The new Vista, under its own nameplate, was taller that the original Camry it was originally based on. Renewal of the Vista was Toyota’s first major platform renewal effort and it was the first one to be mass produced in the FWD design. It completely changed the strut and axle configuration of the car as well as flipping the orientation of the engine to provide more space beneath the hood.

The Vista was released as a sedan and a station wagon, known as the Vista Ardeo, in the fourth generation release. It was available in a 1.8 or 2.0 liter engines, and the interior redesign included a center instrument panel and navigation display. In 2003 Toyota discontinued the Vista, and the dealerships were merged into the Netz network in an effort to promote the emerging Lexus line in 2005.
